Pre-visit Site Visit

previous   next

A pre-visit to the museum can dramatically increase the success of your trip, however museum staff appreciate that this is not always possible.

If you cannot make a pre-visit it would still be helpful to contact the museum to go over some of the following points .

If you can make a pre-visit, phone in advance explaining what you would like to do and the purpose of your trip. Generally visits in these circumstances are free of charge. Ask if there is an Education Officer. If so, arrange to meet him/ her when you visit.

If you can have a copy of the site's risk assessment. This will be a great help when you have to complete your own risk assessment form for school.

You will need to find out:

  • the price of the group rate
  • the location of key facilities: toilets, cafeteria (check prices), shop
  • what arrangements can be made for lunch? Is there a special room available? If so, book it for an agreed time
  • what question sheets/ activities are available from the museum? How much are they? What are the photocopying arrangements? Are they suitable for your purposes? If so, is there an answer sheet? If not, you will have to go around the site and prepare your own question sheet. Remember to note down the location of your questions and record the answers. This will save a lot of confusion on the day. Include some kind of extension exercise for the early finishers.
