On The Day
You will need to take:
- packed lunches for those on free lunches
- First aid kit(s)
- black bags for litter
- tissues/ plastic bags in case of travel sickness.
- mobile phones (which should be left on in case the school is trying to contact you)
- copies of the lists. (Total list of emergency contact numbers and medical notes as well as group lists).
- work sheets
- some spare pens, pencils and sharpeners
- camera.
Remember to take the register before you leave. Do not simply count numbers!
- In the case of any absentees, amend your lists and inform the person in charge of trips and the school office.
- Each group leader should check the names at regular intervals on the day.
- Take the register before leaving on the coach/ getting on the train.
On the coach
- Establish good relations with your coach driver.
- Discuss rules. For example, many drivers ban chewing gum.
- On a short journey, consider banning eating and drinking.
- Check seat belts are fastened. Remind pupils that they must remain fastened throughout the journey.
- Responsible adults must be spread throughout the coach, not all clustered at the front.
At the museum
- If pupils are to be allowed any time which is not directly supervised, they must stay in groups of at least three and usually no more than four.
- Check that they have a means of telling the time between them; many pupils do not wear a watch.
- Tell them to report to an agreed point 15 minutes before you need them.
- A member of staff should stay in an agreed point in case they are needed.
- Do not allow pupils to leave the museum/ gallery under any circumstances.
- Shops can pose all sorts of difficulty. Regulate numbers and supervise pupils closely to avoid embarrassment.
Returning to school
- Do not allow pupils to leave the coach until you have checked for litter.
- In case of delay, make sure you inform your Educational Visits Co-ordinator at school. The school office will be fielding enquiries from parents.
