Follow Up Work

previous

Report back to the EVC (Educational Visits Co-ordinator).

Make maximum use of your trip on your return.

  • The museum may be able to help you with ideas for follow-up activities.
  • You may want to re-visit the discussion you had before the trip about the purpose of museums.
  • You might look again at Culture 24's  Museum in a Classroom resource and consider setting up your own museum at school.
  • Revisiting Making Museums and Museum in a Classroom might also be useful.
  • The museum might be able to provide a follow-up visit to your school or provide loan material.
  • Some museums provide online resources which can be used for follow-up. Search museum websites to see what there is, or encourage the children to do so.
  • Follow-up work is where you could really develop a cross-curricular approach.
    • Speaking and listening.
    • Writing for different audiences, e.g., a newsletter account, labels, publicity flyers.
    • Discussing the pros and cons of museums, and forging stronger links with your local museum (Citizenship).
    • Looking at how to care for and conserve different materials (Science).
    • Designing and setting up a display (Design and Technology).
    • Using IT to research and prepare the above.
    • Measurement of display space.
  • It is a good idea to ask one of the pupils to write a brief account of the trip for the school newsletter.
  • Set homework or an assessment on the work. Have an alternative for those who did not go on the trip.
  • Put up a display of photographs and related work. (It's good publicity for the Department.) Remember parental permission is required for the use of photographs. Check your forms!
  • If you feel that you had good service from the site, write a brief letter or make a phone call to express your appreciation. It will be gratefully received and may elicit a response which you can pass onto the person in charge of trips or the Headteacher  (more good publicity for your Department).
  • Start thinking about your next trip! The more you do the easier it gets!

NOTE: if you are planning a residential trip or one which could possibly involve any form of hazardous pursuit, different regulations are in force. Refer to your person in charge of school trips.
