Teaching Outside the Classroom

On 17 November 2008, Museums, Libraries and Libraries South East, engage and the Group for Education in Museums (GEM) hosted a joint training day entitled Teaching Outside the Classroom: Working with Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Providers. The day aimed to:

  • Introduce working with Initial Teacher Education Providers and trainee teachers
  • Demonstrate the benefits of working in collaboration
  • Show how museums/archives and galleries could get involved using the Teaching Outside the Classroom (TOtC)  web resource

The attached power point presentations from the day include some of the information provided by ITE providers, museums who have worked with ITE students, and GEM on how TOtC fits with the Learning Outside the Classroom agenda. Thames Valley Museums Learning Group Conference

On 13th November 2008, MLA South East and Renaissance South East funded a conference on behalf of the Thames Valley Museums Learning Group at the River & Rowing Museum, Henley on Thames. The aime of the conference was to  address; 

  • How can schools can with museums to realise new ambitions for the primary and secondary curriculum?
  • What benefits can these partnerships bring to learners?
  • What challenges does partnership working pose for the school and museum sectors?
  • How can past experience help with future planning?
  • How can we extend and build new partnerships?

Touch and the value of object handling

An Arts and Humanities Research Council Research Networks Scheme organised by UCL Museums & Collections.  The aim of these workshops is to bring together a diverse range of experts from academic  and museum environments, with a view to establishing a network where information relating to the value of object handling can be shared and developed.
