Accreditation

Accreditation is the minimum standard for museums and was launched by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) in November 2004.

Museums that are Registered are being invited to apply for Accreditation over the course of five years (2005-2009). Museums not currently Registered can apply to become Accredited at any time, but are required to contact Helen Gibbons, Museum Development Service Manager to discuss an appropriate timetable for application.

Changes to Accreditation in the South East

From November 1st 2008 there will be new arrangements for the delivery of Accreditation following the restructure of the MLA and the planned closure of the regional agencies, including MLA South East.

MLA will continue to take the overall role in administering the scheme and the Accreditation Panel as well as taking on new elements of the programme. Consultants, contracted by MLA, will continue to be used in the region to assess applications. All files relating to Accreditation activity will be held by MLA, not at a regional level. Visit MLA for more information on Accreditation.

Regional support will continue through the Museum Development Service. Contact your Museum Development Officer for information on when you will be able to apply and support to prepare for assessment.

Download the Accreditation In Brief (PDF, 92Kb) for more information about the changes to the management of Accreditation. This file is in Adobe PDF format and you will Adobe Reader to view them.
