About Renaissance
Renaissance is the government-funded programme to revitalise regional museums, implemented and managed by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).
In October 2001 the report – Renaissance in the Regions – recommended creating an integrated framework for England’s museums based on a network of regional Hubs. It set out how, with direct government funding, these ‘Hubs’ could be transformed into centres of excellence in delivering services to users and collections management and care.
Renaissance also encompasses:
- The Museum Development Services, funded through the Regional Agencies.
- Subject Specialist Networks, which are being established to share scholarship, collections and collections expertise, research and interpretation skills. National museums and museums with Designated collections will play a key role in these networks.
- Designation Challenge Fund, which supports museums that hold collections which have been identified as being of outstanding national and international importance within England's non-national museums.
- Collections Link, which is the national advisory service for collections management issues, managed by mda.
