Space and Equipment

If possible use your gallery space for schools, but if this is not appropriate due to lack of space, and you have the room, try to make a space for learning which can take a minimum of 30 children.

  • This space might also double up as a place for the children to leave coats and bags.
  • Most important, if the school will be in the museum over the lunch hour, is somewhere to store and eat their packed lunches.

Consult the Arts Council publication “Space for Learning” which is an invaluable, practical guide for anyone planning to design a new learning space.

The North West Hub have undertaken a research project called Creative Spaces which explores the ways in which young children experience the space of the museum or gallery and the effect this has on their learning. Contact the Renaissance North West on 0161 235 8825 for copies of the report.

Look at the next page Equipping a Room for more information on what to put in the space.
