How the National Curriculum Works

previous   next

There are three core subjects:

  • Mathematics
  • English
  • Science

Teaching requirements are clearly laid out in National Curriculum documents.

An additional two strategies were introduced into Primary schools.

  • National Numeracy Strategy
  • National Literacy Strategy

However, the addition of these two strategies added to the feeling in Primary schools that the curriculum was restrictive and that there was an imbalance in learning.

Excellence and Enjoyment - A Strategy for Primary Schools

This strategy offers schools the opportunity to:

  • find ways to offer a more balanced timetable
  • put greater emphasis on cross-curricular learning
  • be creative and innovative in how they teach and in how they run the school
  • create external links with partner organisations such as museums
  • extend the support given to Literacy and Numeracy to other subjects: Modern Foreign Languages, Physical Education, and Music.

How could the Primary Strategy affect Primary schools?

It emphasises enjoyment  and encourages schools to think holistically, valuing enriching experiences such as out-of-school learning.

How to Take This Forward

  • Contact the Local Education Authority (LEA) Primary Strategy Manager.
  • Teacher networks are encouraged – see if you can attend some of the relevant groups.
  • Schools are encouraged to reach out to parents and communities. Contact your local schools to discuss how your museum might enable this.
