Key Stage 3 National Strategy
The strategy aims to raise standards by making education for 11-14 year olds challenging, demanding, vigorous and inspiring across the whole curriculum. It is based on four principles.
- Expectations: establishing high expectations for all pupils and setting challenging targets for them to achieve.
- Progression: strengthening the transition from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 and ensuring progression in teaching and learning across Key Stage 3.
- Engagement: promoting approaches to teaching and learning that engage and motivate pupils and demand their active participation.
- Transformation: strengthening teaching and learning through a programme of professional development and practical support.
How the Key Stage 3 Strategy is Relevant to Museums
The Strategy:
- provides an excellent way of identifying shared agendas
- places emphasis on enjoyment, involvement and motivation
- encourages schools to think more holistically, valuing enrichment experiences such as out-of-school learning
- allows teachers to interpret the curriculum in new and imaginative ways.
How to Take This Forward
- Contact your Local Authority Key Stage 3 Strategy Managers and consult them about your ideas.
- Use teacher networks for consultation or to collaborate on projects.
- Schools will also be looking for ways to reach out to parents and their communities, so make the first move to involve your museum in their plans.
- There is a demand for lesson resources of the right type and quality, e.g., increasingly widespread use of lesson starter activities offers an opportunity for you to create activities that tie in with the Key Stage 3 Curriculum and also to get pupils thinking about your organisation.
