ICT
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) such as the Internet, email and digitisation can open up learning possibilities for many pupils.
ICT is a subject in its own right but there is also a statutory requirement to include ICT in all subjects, apart from Physical Education.
New technologies have the potential to:
- provide rich, interactive learning experiences
- encourage creativity and innovation
- be stimulating and challenging
- promote feelings of worth and self esteem
- encourage and develop new skills
- develop and extend ability
- reach large audiences
- push the boundaries
- appeal to all sorts of students
- reduce the sense of isolation
- provide contact and sustainability
Ways in Which Museums Can Use ICT with Schools
- To explore different ways of creating and presenting artwork.
- Encouraging the use of digital cameras, camcorders, videos to record a visit.
- Video conferencing can offer access to collections and expertise.
- Websites can be used:
- as a celebration or documentation of a project
- for inspiration (see the Artefact website below)
- to offer a virtual visit
- to prepare for a real visit
- to evaluate a project
- as a means of two way communication between the museum and the school
- for research
- for access to collections which may not be accessible otherwise
N.B., Be aware of Child Protection issues when putting any material on the Internet.
How to Take This Forward
- Contact museums that have incorporated ICT into their work with schools (see below for useful links).
- In discussions with teachers about developing resources consider the use of new technologies to
prepare for, during and in follow-up to a museums session or visit. ICT solutions might include:
- a CD ROM or material on a website can be used in preparation or follow up
- digital images could be used by schools and museums
