Geography
In Geography, the emphasis is on the development of geographical skills and techniques, through different contexts.
What resources do museums have which could help with Geography?
- Maps which show the development of an area over time
- Photographs of the area over time
- Aerial photographs
- Geology collections
- Artefacts from another country
During Key Stage 1
Pupils:
- investigate their local area and a contrasting area in the United Kingdom or abroad
- find out about the environment in both areas and the people who live there
- begin to learn about the wider world
During Key Stage 2
Pupils:
- widen their investigation to include a variety of people, places and environments at different scales in the United Kingdom and abroad
- start to make links between different places in the world
- find out how people affect the environment and how they are affected by it
At Both Key Stages
Pupils:
- carry out geographical enquiry inside and outside the classroom
- ask geographical questions about people, places and environments
- use geographical skills and resources such as maps and photographs and at Key Stage 2 atlases, aerial photographs and ICT
At Key Stages 3 and 4 these investigations are also relevant.
Many pupils at Key Stage 3 look at the issue of tourism and its management at historic sites. Look at the page on Leisure and Tourism to find out more.
How to Take This Forward
- Look at the Geography National Curriculum and the Schemes of Work and consult with local schools. If you are a local museum you probably have many resources which can help pupils with their study.
- Discuss your collections with curatorial staff to see which might be suitable for use with schools.
- Contact museums who have developed resources to support Geography. The websites below might provide useful links.
- Consider how a geographical element might be linked to support of another curriculum area, e.g., local history.
