Every Child Matters

Every Child Matters is a scheme set up by the government to make sure that every child has access to a good life, whoever they are and wherever they come from. It is a new approach to the well-being of children and young people from birth to age 19.

The Government's aim is for every child, whatever their background or circumstances, to have the support they need to:

  • be healthy
  • stay safe
  • enjoy and achieve
  • make a positive contribution
  • achieve economic well-being

How Every Child Matters Affects Museums

Museums can play an important role in helping to deliver the aims of Every Child Matters.

  • Organisations involved with providing services to children will be teaming up in new ways, sharing information and working together, to protect children and young people from harm and help them achieve what they want in life. Museums will need to be involved in this.
  • Children and young people will have far more say about issues that affect them as individuals and collectively. So museums will need to involve young people in the process of development.
  • Over the next few years, every local authority will be working with its partners, through children's trusts, to find out what works best for children and young people in its area and act on it. So museums will need to flag up their availability as potential partners.
  • When asked what they regard as their priorities, children and young people consistently reply that they would like more "things to do and places to go".

Museums have a unique role to play in helping to deliver the Every Child Matters: Change for Children agenda, by:

  • delivering the five outcomes and in particular enjoying and achieving and making a positive contribution
  • being key partners in children's trusts and contributing to Children and Young People's Plans
  • supporting families and promoting diversity
  • reaching millions of children and young people through positive out-of-school activities.
