Design and Technology
Design and Technology (D&T) covers the process of developing, planning and making solutions:
- to identified problems
- through the application of appropriate techniques.
How Museums Can Help
- You may be able to incorporate D & T with another Curriculum subject.
- Some D&T units may not be allotted much time in the Curriculum so may not justify a museum visit, but combined with elements of the History and/or Science Curriculum might make a trip worthwhile.
How to Take This Forward
Key Stages 1 and 2
If you look at the Schemes of Work for Design and Technology for Key Stages 1 and 2 in consultation with a local school you will probably be able to identify subjects which relate to and could be enhanced by your collections.
- Unit 1D Houses is an obvious one for a museum which might be in a house, have a collection of houses or have artefacts relating to houses and homes.
- Unit 2A Vehicles is an obvious choice for a museum with a transport collection.
- Unit 4E Lighting it up might be linked to a Science unit on Electricity and look at different kinds of lighting in the past.
- Unit 6B Slippers might link to a textile collection of different types of footwear.
Key Stage 3
The following units could be related to museum collections.
- Units 7aii Understanding materials: resistant materials, and aiii Textiles.
- Units 07bii Designing and making for yourself Focus: resistant materials, and biii Focus: Textiles and so on.
It is also worth consulting with teachers about their particular requirements for Key Stage 4.
