Cross-curricular Work
Schools are increasingly looking for ways to link up the different Curriculum areas. Museum collections are ideal for supporting cross-curricular work. For instance, a visit to a museum to study Victorians might support the History Curriculum and:
- Literacy (speaking and listening )
- English (drama and creative writing opportunities)
- Science (materials)
- Maths (counting, measurement)
- Technology (how things are made and move)
- Information Communication Technologies (research from websites)
and so on.
The Culture 24 (formerly 24 Hour Museum) website has a really useful downloadable teachers pack, "The Museum in a Classroom", which details how to structure and manage a cross-curricular project, and which can be linked into the National Curriculum through most subjects and at most levels.
Buckinghamshire County Museum worked with two local schools to develop cross-curricular sessions. Their pack "Into the Woods" which was developed for a temporary exhibition has proved stimulating as it looked at 'living with trees' (bringing in art, poetry and environment) and 'working with wood' (chair making, family history, trades and local studies).
The following pages demonstrate how museums can support individual curriculum subjects but also indicate how subjects can be linked with downloads of case studies and session plans from museums in the South East.
