Citizenship
Citizenship:
- is part of the Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship framework in Primary Schools
- is a compulsory separate subject in Secondary Schools
- gives pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in society
- helps pupils to become informed, thoughtful and responsible citizens, aware of their duties and rights
- is a non-examination subject
Citizenship Education has three strands:
- Knowledge and understanding about becoming an informed citizen
- Developing skills of enquiry and communication
- Developing skills of participation and responsible action
How to Take This Forward
- Schools will welcome your help with Citizenship, it is a really valuable area to tap into.
- Look at the National Curriculum to get more information, see below.
- Contact local schools to see how they are delivering Citizenship and how museums might help.
- Think about using your collections to create resources that will focus on developing the two skill strands because they are currently underdeveloped in schools.
- As schools are expected to look at real life issues, examine your collections to see how they can be linked to current events.
