Which Objects to Use
To decide which objects are suitable for use with schools you will need to find out about what teachers will be planning to teach.
It is well worth investigating the Schemes of Work, which are recommended by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCFS).
- Most schools take the Schemes of Work as the starting point for their plans.
- Teachers make their own decisions about how to make best use of this resource, remembering that the schemes are optional (but it is important to note that many schools regard these schemes as mandatory and follow them, almost, to the letter).
- Schools can use as much or as little as they wish and are free to devise their own ways of meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum.
The Schemes of Work:
- are guidelines to support medium- and long-term planning
- help schools to implement the National Curriculum programmes of study
- are made up of units or topics that together cover the programmes of study and non-statutory guidelines for Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 in all subjects except English and Mathematics.
The Physical Education (PE) and Citizenship schemes also cover the Key Stage 4 programmes of study.
Each unit:
- sets out learning objectives (which are based on the programme of study)
- suggests teaching activities to meet these objectives
- defines outcomes of pupils' learning
- promotes learning across the Curriculum by including links to other areas such as spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, key skills and thinking skills as well as work in other subjects.
