Using a Freelance Educator
Small local authority and independent museums that do not have dedicated education staff may employ freelance educators who are paid from the proceeds of charges made to the schools and other groups (see next page for information about charging).
If the museum is employing freelance staff they will need to ensure that the booking form makes it clear that sessions will have to be paid for unless cancelled in advance.
You will need to ensure that any freelance educator you employ has the correct insurance levels and has been checked by the Criminal Records Bureau, and that you ask for, and follow up, references.
You will also need to ensure that you have an emergency plan so that if the freelancer is not available for the session someone else will be able to take over, i.e., you will need to know the details of the planned session.
